Overview

Mental health challenges and trauma can significantly affect a learner's wellbeing, behaviour, engagement, and ability to succeed.

As safeguarding responsibilities continue to grow within Further Education, staff need the confidence and skills to recognise trauma and respond effectively.

This webinar explores the relationship between mental health, trauma, and safeguarding, helping participants understand how traumatic experiences can influence behaviour and learning.

Through a trauma-informed safeguarding lens, delegates will learn how to identify signs of distress, promote psychological safety, and respond with empathy while maintaining clear safeguarding responsibilities.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the relationship between trauma, mental health, and safeguarding and understand their impact on learner wellbeing, behaviour, and engagement in FE.
  • Recognise the signs and indicators of trauma-related distress and identify when safeguarding intervention or additional support may be required.
  • Apply trauma-informed safeguarding principles to promote safety, trust, and positive outcomes while maintaining professional boundaries and accountability.
  • Implement practical strategies to create supportive and psychologically safe learning environments that enhance resilience, inclusion, and  learner success.
