Overview
AI is rapidly becoming part of everyday teaching practice, yet confident use involves more than knowing how to write an effective prompt. Practitioners must make informed decisions about when AI will genuinely improve learning, when it may introduce risk and when it should not be used at all.
Beyond the Prompt offers a practical, pedagogically grounded exploration of AI in post-16 teaching and learning. It will challenge the assumption that faster content creation necessarily leads to better learning and consider what responsible, inclusive use looks like in vocational settings.
Drawing on practical examples, the webinar will help delegates reflect on their current practice and build confidence in using AI without weakening professional judgement, learner thinking or independence. Participants will leave with a clearer basis for making purposeful decisions about AI and a practical approach they can apply within their own context.
What you will learn
By the end of this session, you’ll be able to:
- identify where AI can add genuine pedagogical value, and where a human-led or AI-free approach is more appropriate;
- use a purpose-first framework to plan AI-supported teaching and learning activities;
- adapt prompts and outputs to strengthen vocational learning, explanations, questioning, feedback, accessibility and learner participation;
- critically evaluate AI-generated content for accuracy, bias, inclusion, cognitive demand and learner agency, applying appropriate boundaries and human oversight;
- identify one proportionate change to test and evaluate in practice.
Agenda
10:00–10:10 – Welcome, confidence check and the practical problem: AI use is growing faster than consistent pedagogical practice.
10:10–10:25 – Purpose before prompting: identifying the learning need, the learner barrier and the role AI should—or should not—play.
10:25–10:45 – Practical applications: planning and adaptation, explanations and examples, participation and accessibility, formative questioning and feedback.
10:45–11:00 – Worked scenario: evaluating and improving an AI-supported teaching activity using a simple planning and review framework.
11:00–11:15 – Protecting learning: accuracy, bias, data and safeguarding, cognitive effort, learner agency and human oversight.
11:15–11:30 – Personal action planning, questions and one practical next step.
Interactive workshop, potential polls, use of chat function, breakout rooms and Padlet, plus likely demos using Co-Pilot and Chat GPT and Q&A throughout. All will be design as part of the package, no input required from AELP.
Who should attend?
Primary audience:
- Teachers, trainers, tutors, assessors and learning support practitioners working across apprenticeships, colleges, independent training providers, adult education and employer provision.
- Curriculum, teaching and learning, quality and professional development leads who support staff to use AI consistently and responsibly.
The session is suitable for practitioners and first-line or middle managers with basic awareness of generative AI. No technical expertise is required. Colleagues responsible for curriculum and staff development may benefit from attending together where shared implementation is the goal.
