Earlier this month, AELP organised for Alex Sobel MP (Leeds Central and Headingley) to visit Kaplan’s Leeds centre for two roundtable discussions. Sallyann Turner, AELP’s Senior Policy Manager (Adults and Devolution), also attended the visit.
The first roundtable gave apprentices the opportunity to share their experiences directly with Alex, including how they apply their learning in the workplace, develop practical and interpersonal skills, and plan their future careers. Discussions also explored the role of technology, including AI, fintech and data science, and how to make young people more aware of the career opportunities available.
A second roundtable brought together local employers to discuss recruitment, funding and progression. Employers raised concerns about how age-related funding rules could influence recruitment decisions and limit progression opportunities for people aged 25 and over. The discussion also highlighted the importance of avoiding funding cliff edges that could disrupt opportunities for learners and employers.
The visit provided a first-hand insight into how apprenticeships work in practice, while enabling apprentices and employers to share their experiences and feed directly into discussions about skills policy.
“Alex Sobel heard memorable stories from apprentices about the difference their apprenticeships have made to their lives. It was a pleasure to host Alex, firstly because he is committed to maintaining apprenticeship opportunities in professional services and fintech within West Yorkshire and secondly because he listened intently to apprentices, answered their questions directly and took employers' feedback about the impact of policy decisions on board.” Jenny Pelling, Director of Skills and Strategy at Kaplan.
Could you host an MP visit?
MP visits are a valuable opportunity for AELP members to showcase the difference their work makes to learners, employers and local communities, while helping parliamentarians understand the realities of delivering skills and training.
