Overview
Exploitation does not happen in isolation. For learners aged 16 and over, harm can emerge in a range of contexts including peer groups, educational settings, neighbourhoods, transport networks, community spaces and increasingly through online platforms. Understanding these influences is essential if practitioners are to identify risk early and respond effectively.
This webinar introduces the concept of contextual safeguarding and explores how looking beyond the individual can strengthen safeguarding practice within further education settings. Delegates will develop their understanding of extra-familial harm, including criminal exploitation, sexual exploitation, online harms and harmful peer influences, while considering the contexts in which these risks emerge.
The session will encourage curiosity about the environments, relationships and experiences shaping learners' lives. Delegates will explore contextual risks within colleges, local communities and digital spaces, and consider how these factors can increase vulnerability or create opportunities for harm.
The webinar will also examine how organisations can move from recognising concerns to taking effective action, adopting a contextual approach to assessment, intervention and risk reduction. Particular attention will be given to the importance of information sharing, professional curiosity and partnership working in safeguarding learners aged 16+.
By the end of the session, delegates will have greater confidence in identifying contextual risks, understanding the wider factors influencing exploitation, and responding to concerns through a collaborative, multi-agency safeguarding approach.
