Engineering, Manufacturing and Automotive Sector Forum

Led by John Osborne (Head of Quality, MIT Skills), this forum reviews technological change, employer demand, and priorities across engineering, manufacturing and automotive. The group also explores innovation, sector trends, and timely issues affecting delivery.

As Chair of the AELP Engineering, Manufacturing & Automotive Group, I am proud to lead at a time of unprecedented change. With decades of experience in engineering, manufacturing, and education—including apprenticeships—I have dedicated my career to driving continuous improvement and aligning commercial ambitions with practical delivery. My work with AELP and MIT Skills has centred on shaping national skills strategies, fostering collaboration, and ensuring the UK remains competitive in a rapidly evolving global market. I also chaired ALPS/ALPHI for a number of years, strengthening provider networks and championing best practice across the sectors.

Our vision is clear: to strengthen the UK’s industrial training base by embracing electrification, autonomous systems, and digital integration while equipping the workforce with future-ready skills. This group provides members with a platform for strategic dialogue, practical insights, and opportunities to influence policy. Expect collaboration on critical issues such as sustainability, advanced manufacturing adoption, and skills development.

I am particularly passionate about addressing the skills gap—the shortage of skilled teachers and assessors and rising training costs threaten our ability to develop future talent. Together, we will champion solutions like industry-education partnerships, digital learning platforms, and shared resource models.

Thank you for joining us. Together, we will build a future that is innovative, sustainable, and globally competitive.
