Overview
Racism and racial trauma are not just social issues—they are safeguarding concerns. This interactive session will equip educators, trainers, and safeguarding leads with the understanding and strategies needed to confidently address racism in their organisations.
Led by Bilal Harry Khan, the session will explore what racial trauma is, the types of bias most commonly seen in educational and training settings, and how to effectively challenge them. You’ll leave with practical approaches to recognising, responding to, and preventing racism—all through a safeguarding lens.
Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Recognise what racial trauma is and how it affects learners and colleagues;
- Understand the different types of bias that may occur in education and training environments;
- Identify practical ways to tackle racism as a safeguarding issue;
- Use real-world scenarios to build confidence in addressing incidents effectively
Failing to address racism in your organisation can result in ongoing harm, missed safeguarding responsibilities, and damage to trust with learners and staff.

When Bilal is not found listening to UK Garage Music and eating fried plantain, Bilal often centre stage hosting or facilitating groups.
Bilal's background within Youth Engagement and workshop design has allowed him to design and deliver hundreds of speeches and workshops in schools and youth settings across the country on behalf of partners such as KPMG, Virgin Atlantic, Boots and Barclays.
For change to happen, Bilal believes that we must begin to challenge our own assumptions and as someone who's no stranger to conversation, he is curious about creating the experiential spaces for that to happen.
Subsequently, he has moved into delivering workshops and training sessions with adults across the UK and internationally and work through embracing discomfort as a tool for allowing growth.
