Firstly a big thank you for all the emails I received agreeing with the broad approach to Functional Skills maths and English – it is nice to know firstly people read this and secondly that at least some of you agree. Either the rest of the membership violently disagree but are too polite to email me, or silence is agreement. We shall see, but it is an important area as the Government looks at the findings and recommendations of the ETF Functional Skills review and it is vital we get this right for the young people and adults who have still failed after 11 years of schooling and need a different approach and support to reach competency at level two in both subjects. What more evidence is needed than 11 years that haven’t delivered the most fundamental of outcomes – although we shouldn’t forget that Ofqual does ensure that the same proportion of 16 year olds, give or take, fail every year – the whole purpose of their “comparable outcomes” – don’t get me started.
