In today’s world of reform and challenge to the skills system, effective leadership at senior level is critical to the success of training providers and other organisations in the skills landscape. A new set of support materials for board directors and trustees will help provider boards and board members to become fully aware of their responsibilities and carry out their roles effectively.
The materials are aimed at boards and board members of work-based learning providers. They are an outcome of previous research undertaken by LSIS and AELP into strategic leadership and accountability in training organisations delivering work-based learning.
The materials are divided into two series for easy use and reference. Series 1 is a set of briefing notes to which boards and board members can refer for clear, concise information, while Series 2 gives real examples of how provider boards have responded to the key challenges facing their organisations. Questions and suggestions are included for boards to consider in relation to their own effectiveness.
Briefing notes cover the following eight topics:
• Purpose of boards
• Guiding principles
• The structure of boards
• How boards function
• The role of board members
• Board effectiveness
• Board dynamics
• Managing accountability and risk
The examples illustrate how boards can promote continuous improvement, analyse and use information and develop strategic direction. They show the value of external scrutiny and demonstrate how boards can set and monitor high expectations of the management team.
The materials also contain a list of useful websites and publications that provide more detail on the role of boards and board effectiveness, and a summary of the current reforms in the skills system which are likely to affect training provider boards.
