Catalyst: Developing Capability, Unlocking Potential Conference 2009
Representatives from the worlds of business and education were united at a recent Catalyst Programme conference, where Olympic medal winner Roger Black was among the guest speakers. The event, which was held in London, aimed to inspire delegates to support Catalyst and to participate in its programmes, which are designed to help the lifelong learning sector create a world class workforce. It kicked off with a series of keynote speeches, which were followed by workshops and a panel debate, chaired by guest speaker David Sherlock, CBE, Director of Beyond Standards.
In a presentation entitled ‘Making it Happen,’ David Hunter, Chief Executive of Lifelong Learning UK, explained what the sector needed to do achieve its goals of ‘developing capability’ and ‘unlocking potential.’
He said: “We must embrace new talent, both in management and in teaching roles; we must continue to identify and share best practice, and set higher standards of excellence. We must have courage as an industry to prepare for jobs that may not exist yet.”
Delegates from training providers, colleges, educational bodies, commercial organisations and the media, were given the chance to find out more about various ‘tools’ that fit within the Catalyst programme and to give feedback on any previous experience of them. The programmes were ‘Make A Difference,’ ‘Pass on Your Skills’ and ‘Business Interchange,’ which all have a key role to play in driving up standards within the further education sector.
