The UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) superseded two former government-funded agencies - the Sector Skills Development Agency and the National Employment Panel - which closed on 31 March 2008.
The Commission was launched on 1 April 2008 and was a key recommendation in Lord Leitch's 2006 review of skills. The Commission will manage the performance and re-licensing of the 25 employer-led Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) who provide a cohesive powerful voice for employers on current and future skills needs. Each SSC is an employer-led, independent organisation that covers a specific sector across the UK.
